OntheChristianCulture"sInfluenceonEnglishProverbs摘要语言是文化的组成部分、文化的载体,语言与文化密不可分。英语谚语不仅在语言上优美生动,在内容上也蕴涵着丰富的文化知识,几乎涵盖了政治、经济、宗教、风俗、历史等社会生活的各个方面,反映了英语国家人民对社会、自然的深刻理解。语言与文化有着密切的关系,语言反映了一•个民族的文化,同吋又受到文化的巨大影响,而宗教是人类思想文化的重耍组成部分及表现形式。英语谚语集语言学、语音学、美学于一体,给人以启迪、回味,英语谚语有很深的文化底蕴和内涵,学习、使用英语谚语冇助于提高使用者的文学水平、文化修养。谚语作为语言的核心和精华,与一个民族的地理环境、历史背景、风俗习惯、宗教信仰、价值观念等方面有着不可分割的联系。本人从基督教对女性歧视现象中以及基督教对时间观产生的影响,來论述基督教对英语谚语的影响。最后从这个影响屮得出的五种价值取向,能使我们更好的认识和理解西方社会的宗教文化对他们语言产生
的影响,以此更好的了解及交流。关键词:谚语;文化;语言;
AbstractLanguageispartofcultureanditisinfluencedandshapedbyculture.Englishproverbsarenotonlybeautifulandvividinitslanguage,butalsocontainrichculturalknowledge,whichcoverspolitics,economy,religion,custom,historyandsoon,almostallaspectsofsociallife.Languagehasatightrelationshipwithcultureanditreflectsculture.Proverbsareanimportantpartofthelanguage.Languageiscloselyconnectedwithculture,anditisgreatlyinfluencedbycultureaswellasreligion.Itisanimportantpartofhumanideasandculture.Englishproverbsgettogetherwithlinguistics,phonetics,aesthetics,givingpersonafeelofenlightenment.Englishproverbshaveverydeepculturalbackgroundandtheconnotation.StudyingandusingEnglishproverbscanhelpusimproveourculturallevelandknowledge.Asthecoreandessenceofculture,idiomshaveaninseparablerelationwithanation"sgeographicalenvironment,historicalbackground,customsandconventionsandreligiousbeliefs.ThisarticleattemptsthroughtheChristiancultureinfluencesondiscriminateagainstwomenandthetimeconcepttodescribetheinfluenceofChristiancultureonEnglishproverbs.Finally,gettingthefivevalueorientationsfromtheinfluence,whichcanmakeusknowandunderstandtheinfluenceofChristiancultureonEnglishproverbs,andgetabettercommunication.Keyword:proverb,culture,language

IntroductionReligionisanimportantcomponentofhumanthoughtandculturesection.Differentreligionsreflectdifferentformsofculturalexpression一reflectingthedifferentculturalcharacteristicsanddifferentculturalbackgrounds.Proverbsandculturehaveverycloserelationship,andEnglishhasagreatimpactonlanguage.InFeudalEuropeansociety,Christianityplaysaparticularlyimportantrole.IthasbeenregardedasthestatereligioninthelateRomanEmpire,andlaterspreadthroughoutEuropeandtherestoftheworld.TheBibleistheChristianclassic,includingthe"OldTestament11ofthirty-ninevolumesandthe”NewTestament”oftwenty-sevenvolumes.Languageisthecarrierofculture.Asanimportantpartoflanguage,proverbscontaintheinsightsandinspirationinpeopledliving.Religionisacultureofhumanthought,animportantpart,sothelanguageandreligionarecloselyrelated.ProverbscertainlycoulddefinitelybeinfluencedbythereligionandtherearemanyreligionscultureinthemodernEnglishvocabulary.AsChristianityisthemainculturalfaith,itplaysanimportantpartintheirculturalandlanguageenvironments.CertainlyithasasignificantinfluenceonEnglishproverbs.Christianity:CentraltotheChristianfaithisloveorAgape.ChristiansalsobelieveJesusistheMessiahprophesiedintheHebrewBible,theSonofGod,andthesaviorofmankindfromtheirsins.MostChristiansbelieveinthedoctrineoftheTrinity,adescriptionofGodasFather,Son,andHolySpiri匸ThisincludesRomanCatholicism,EasternOrthodoxy,andthevastmajorityofProtestantism.AminorityofProtestantsandotherindependentgroupsareNontrinitarians.Theterm”Christian”isalsousedadjectivallytodescribeanythingassociatedwithChristianity,orinaproverbialsensenallthatisnoble,andgood,andChrist-like.(Netl)Proverb:Proverbisasimpleandconcretesayingpopularlyknownandrepeated,whichexpressesatruth,basedoncommonsenseorthepracticalexperienceofhumanity.TheyareoftenmetaphoricaLAproverbthatdescribesabasicruleofconductmayalsobeknownasamaxim.Ifaproverbisdistinguishedbyparticularlygoodphrasing,itmaybeknownasanaphorism.Proverbsareoftenborrowedfromsimilarlanguagesandcultures,andsometimescomedowntothepresentthroughmorethanonelanguage.BoththeBibleandMedievalLatinhaveplayedaconsiderableroleindistributingproverbsacrossEurope,althoughalmosteveryculturehasexamplesofitsown.(Net2)EnglishproverbsandChristianityareinseparable.ThisthesisaimsatintroducingtherelationbetweenEnglishproverbsandChristianandtheinfluenceofChristianityontheproverbs,andthevalueorientationofEnglishproverbsinChristianity.
2.EnglishProverbsreflectingreligiousideasReligionasanideologicalandculturalexpressionhasalwaysplayedasignificantroleinhumansociety,oftenasametaphorinproverbsamongtheidiomswithimages,concise,andprofoundmeanings,wits,humorandsoon.AconsiderablenumberofEnglishproverbsarederivedfromtheBible.TheBiblewasfirstwritteninHebrew.Inthe4thcentury,afterConstantinethemonarchyoftheRomanEmpiremadeitasthestatereligionofChristianity,theBiblewastranslatedintoLatinandthenitwasintroducedintoEuropeancountries.ProfessorJohnWychtranslatedtheBiblefromLatinintoEnglish,andadvocatedtheuseofEnglishinchurch,sothatitfurtherspreadinBritain.TheBibleisnotonlyareligiousclassic,butalsoaliterarymasterpiece;itoccupiesanimportantpositioninhistoryofworldliterature.TheBiblehasaveryimportantpositionduringtheprocessfortheformationoflanguageandstyle.2.1.ReflectingtoChristianteachingsEnglishProverbsarerelevantChristianteachings.ManycharactersandstoriesarefromtheBible.TheBiblerecordedmanystoriesandmanyofthemhavebeenwidelyknownasanimportantsourceofEnglishproverbs.Forexample,bytheskinofone"steeth,aphrasefromtheBookofJob(Section20,Chapter19).GodmadeJobruin,illness,totestwhetherhebelievedinGod.Inthiscase,manypeopleabandonedhim,butheendured.Hisfriendssaid,uMyfleshclosetothebones,teethskinIonlyescaped11.Theteetharenoskin,whichisextremelydangerous,inadditiontoallbutthelossoflife.Peopleborrowthisphrase,whichmeans"NineLives蔦"escaped.”DoubtingThomasisanotherexample.ThisproverbcomesfromJohn(Section20,Chapter2,TheNewTestament):OnthethirddayofChrist"sresuiTection,heappearedbeforehisdisciples,butoneofhisdisciplesThomashappenednotthatday,becausehedidnotwitnessofChrist,hedidnotbelieveotherpeople,didnotbelievethatChristhadcomebacktolife.Later,peopleusethis”suspicious”andHnoteasilytrustpeople”todescribethedoubtingperson.TheBibleinWesternsocietyistherealpublicreadingmaterialsandculturalprimers,andalmosteveryhouseholdhasa"Bible•”TheproverbsowthewindandreapthewhirlwindcomesfromBookofHosea(Section7,Chapter&TheOldTestament)DissatisfactionwithIsraefsidolatryofGod,warnedthem,"Theyhavesownthewind,reapthestorm.”Peopleusethisproverbtoexpresstheevilthatwillmeetdoublepunishment.Christianityjustlikeanyotherreligion,thebasicconceptiscreationism;thesoulisimmortaltheoryofpoetic.TheprovisionsofanyreligionhaveacertainmoralandethicalprinciplesandcodeofconducttoregulatethemanandtheGod.TheBibleastheChristianityscriptures,itplaysahugeassistanceinthewesternsocialdevelopment.Itgoesdeeplyintothelivesofpeople,andinfluencespeople"sthinking.TherearealotofEnglishproverbsofthiskind:

bodyofaman.nThuswecanseewomenareinthesubordinateposition,thefollowingisanexample:Awoman,adogandawalnuttree,themoreyoubeatthem,thebettertheywillbe.3.1.1.ReflectingthedistortionofthetraditionalviewofwomenOnonehand,mengivethewomenasocialpositionthatwomenshouldnotholdanysocialscienceoranyotherposition,theirmissioniswithinthefamily.Ontheotherhand,theyusethemoralstandardsofthepatriarchalsocietytomeasurethem,blamethem.Theyconsiderwomenasthesymbolof“evil”.Comparedwithconventionalsociety,theyareagroupofalienation.Theyhavetheevilwoman"sgeneralcharacteristicsintraditionalpatriarchalsociety.Theyaredescribedasjealous,vicious,cunning,orskittish.Englishproverbworkedoutduringtheevolutionofhistorywhichisaspecialexpressionofalanguage.Thereisnodoubtthatinmanywaysitreflectsthepatriarchalsociety.Evenotonlyatethefruitofthetreeofwisdom,butalsoreturnedtoherhusbandtoeat,inviolationofGod"sinjunction;theresultwasthatshewasexpelledfromtheGardenofEden.Evehastheinescapableresponsibilityforhumanbeings5degeneration.InChristianityandJudaismEvewasthefirstwoman.Sheistheimagesofthesourceofallevil.Therefore,inmythology,doingbadthingsorcausingtroublesareoftenthegoddesses.Forexample,becauseofthegoddessmischiefEristhrewanapple,causingtheWarofTroy.Whenanassclimbsaladder,wemayfindwisdominwomen(XieDaren/1987:11),sowecanseethedistortionofthetraditionalviewofwomen.3.1.2.WomenbeingtheconcerninsocietyIntherolesofmenandwomen,menareonahighposition,andtheygiveorders,whilewomenarethepassiveviewers,andfollowers.Womenmustmeettheaestheticdesiresofmen,andsafeguardtheauthorityofmen.Therearemanyproverbsinpraiseofbeauty,andatthesametimetobelittlethebeauty.Therearehalf-humanhalf-demonoftheSiren,oneofagroupofsirens,whotemptsseafarersonshipswithawonderfulsong,sothatthevesselsinkingagroundontheisland.NowondertheFrenchfeministwriterSimonedeBeauvoirGermanywritesinhisbook“thesecondsex”:“Sinceancienttimes,women"sstatusarelowerthanmen,asmenfssecondsex,notbecauseofwomenbornfeature,butalongtimecausedbythemale-centeredandtraditionalforcesofsocialforces".Justas:Gracewilllast,beautywillblast(XieDaren,1987:5).3.2.ChristianviewonthetimeconceptAmericansattachgreatimportancetotime.Tothem,timeisaresource,asubstance,andcanbeused.WiththewordsinEnglish,timecanbematchedwith“buy,sell,save,spend,waste,lose,
makeup,andmeasure^andsoon,wecanseethatwesternpeoplethinktimeasacommodityorsimilartoit:Timeismoney.Inequalopportunity,everyonecleanlyknowsthatonlybyvaluingthetime,theycanwininfiercecompetition.Wastingtimeorkillingtime,isconsideredasadisgrace.3.2.1.PunctualityChristianityrequirespeopletobepunctual.InChristianculture,timeandappointmentiswelldeserved,andbeinglateisrude.Intheirview,anidealmanisonewhoispunctual.Itisinaccordancewiththeagreedupontimetoattendmeetingsordothings.Notwastingpeople"stimeisconsideredtobeveryconsiderate.Theygivethepersonwhoispunctualahighevaluationandtheytakeseriouslyonthecorrectconceptoftime.Theirabilitiestocomplywithtime,isrelatedtotheorganization,thecredibilityorinterestsofindividualsandinsomecaseseveninvolvelegalliability.InChristiandoctrine,manythoughtsrequirepeopletobepunctual.Suchas:Onthegreattimeofclock,thereisbutoneword“now”(XieDaren,1987⑶.3.2.2TimeplanningInaChristiancultureandsociety,theboundariesbetweentimeareveryclear.Whattimeshouldwedowhatandwhattimeispriortothecompletionofwhat,peoplehavetoairangetimeverycarefully.Accordingtothesurveyof91VSOEnglishteachersindifferentprovincesofChinathattheyarenotsatisfiedwiththeChineseteacherwhoteachoneoftheplacesis"somethingwithoutpriornoticeorshortnotice.Thisisareflectionofthecharacteristicsoftheirworkplans-Theythinkthateverythinghasitstime,anddon^tputofftilltomorrowwhatshouldbedonetoday.InthethoughtsofChristiantheythinktimecannotbewasted.TheyhasreadtheBible,theiridolMosesisdeepunderstandingoflifeandtimeislimited,sotheydon"twasteasecond,scheduletheirowntimetightly.Forexample:Losttimeisneverfoundagain,andwhatwecalltimeenoughalwaysproveslittleenough(XieDaren,1987:34).3.2.3seizethepresentopportunitytosetgoalsforthefutureWesternpeoplebelievethatthepresentandthefuturearemoreimportantthanthepastbecausethefuturecanbechargedbyhuman.Theybelievethatbothindividuallyandcollectively,aslongastheycherishthepresenttime,establishshort-termgoalsandlong-termgoals,arrangeagoodtime,theycanchangeeverything,becausewesternconceptoftimeisthefutureorientation.Timeisonewaytorunastraightline,whichsteadilyintothefuture.Asaresult,Westernersinparticular,BritishandAmericanpeopleingeneralvaluetime,payattentiontothespeedandefficiency.Therearemanyproverbsonthisidea:Quickatmeal,quickatwork.Quickfeetandbusyhandfillthemouth(XieDaren,1987:128).
2.FiveorientationsinChristianityinfluencingEnglishProverbsMostwesternpeopleareChristians,andthefollowingfiveorientationsintheChristianityoftheproverbhadasignificantinfluence.2.1.PersonandnaturalrelationalorientationTherearethreedifferentvaluesofdifferentculturesontherelationshipbetweenmanandnature:humansubjecttothenatural,humanandnatureinharmonyandhumanovernature.InrelationshipbetweenhumanandnatureinChristianity,notonlyhasthedualism,whichmeansmanandnatureareseparatingfromeachother,butalsohastheequalitytheorythattakestheGodaslink,butthemosttypicalis"anthropocentrismM.IntheChristianview,Godcreatestheworld,butonlymaniscreatedbyGod"sownimage,onlypersonnelwiththesoulofmancansavetheexistenceofGod.TheGenesisdeclares,inallcreatedthingsofGod,hemostlikehumanbeings;hehopestheprosperityofmankind,andconquertheEarthincludingtherulingfishofthesea,birdsoftheairandthecrawlinganimalsontheland.AccordingtothisviewofGenesis,manisthemasterofnature,notitsmembers.Peoplearesignificanthigherthanotherformsoflife,allthecreaturesarecreatedbyGod,theserviceofhumanity,andtheyareforthebenefitofhumanexistence.Therefore,theruleofmantonatureisabsoluteandunconditional.TheanthropocentrisminChristianityhasasignificantonEnglishproverbs.Forexample:Theywhocannotdoastheywould,mustdoastheycan(XieDaren,1987:124).42TimeorientationDifferentcultureshavedifferenttimeorientations.Inthepasttime-orientedculture,peoplerespecthistoryandtradition;orientedcultureinthepresenttime,peopleemphasizethismoment;inafuturetimeorientationoftheculture,peopleplanandcontrolthefuture.TheBibleuses"GocTseye"tohandlethetime.ItthinkstimeandhistoryarecreatedbyGod.ThetimeorientationofChristianityhasaffecteddirectlyonwesternerstimeconcept.Westernconceptoftimeisthefutureorientation.Timeisonewaytorunastraightline,anditissteadyintothefuture.Asaresult,Westernersinparticular,BritishandAmericaningeneralvaluetime,payattentiontothespeedandefficiency.Thisideaisreflectedinmanyproverbs,suchas:timeismoney;timeworkswonders;timeisthefatheroftruth(XieDaren,1987:26).Theirreversibilityoftime,suchas:timelostcannotbewonagain;Thespeedandefficiencyoftime,suchasTaketimeastimeis,fortimewillbeaway(XieDarenJ987:115)Bythisviewofthefutureorientationofthetime,westernersgenerallybelievethatchangemeansprogress,newthingsarealwaysbetterthanoldthings.TherearesuchmanyEnglishproverbs,asthereisnothingpermanentexceptchange;changeofpasturemakesfatecalves;varietyisthespiceoflife;discontentisthefirststepinprogress.
4.3.BehaviororientationIntermsofbehavior,someculturestakelifeasanimportantandemphasisonhiscapability;someculturestakedevelopmentasimportant,andemphasisontheirpotential;andsomeculturesprefertodothings,moreconcernedwithgoals.InfluencedbyChristianity,westernersbelievethatthematerialworldisopentohumanthinking.Theworldcanbeunderstoodbyhumanmind.Manisinaccordancewiththecreator-Godrsownimagetocreate.AtthesametimeGodhasgivenmanfreewilltoact.Natureisopentothehumancivilization.ThiswesternculturetakeChristianityastheoriginsandtosolvetheobstaclebetweenmanandobjects,andthenwanttomovefurther,whichhasbecometheirbasicspiritculture.Peoplebelievethatthequalityisactiveisonlytokeepforgingaheadandquicklytoact.EnglishproverbaboveideaofChristianity,hasmanyvividexpressions,suchas:actionsspeaklouderthanwords;greatboasters,littledoers;Diligenceisthemotherofsuccess;nosweetwithoutsweat;nevertoooldtolearn.AmericansbelieveGodhelpsthosewhohelpthemselves;Everymanisthearchitectofhisownfortune;everymanmustlaborinhisowntrade(XieDaren,1987:3-228).44HumannatureorientationHumannaturecanbedividedintothreecategories:evilhumannature,goodhumannatureandthecombinationofgoodandevil.Christiantheoryofhumannatureislinkedwiththeoriginalsin.AccordingtoGenesis,humanisunconsciouswiththegoodandevil,onlybecauseatthetemptationofthesnake,AdamandEveatetheforbiddenfruit,theycanknowwhatisgoodandevil,whichiscalledtheoriginalsin.Whilehumanknowsgoodandevilclearly,theywillthoughtoftheirheartsareevilallday.Accordingtothisargument,beforeeatingtheforbiddenfruittheancestorsofhumannatureseemstobenogoodandevil;aftereatingtheforbiddenfruit,thehumannaturewillbecometheevil.Infact,theoriginalsinisonlyametaphor,itshows:thehumanbeingsarethesonsofAdamandEve,theyhavetheintentiontobeevilandcrimesincethetimefrombirth.Therefore,therearemanyproverbsexpressingthatidea:Manisnotthecreatureofcircumstance;circumstancesarethecreatureofman.Iamthecaptainofmysoul;andthecaptainofmyfate(XieDaren,1987:3-228).4.5.SocialorientationThesocialorientationofChristianitymainlyreflectsontheChristianethics.Itfocusesonthephysicalandmaterialareastointerprettherelationshipbetweenpersonandperson,societyandhumanbeings,universeandhumanbeings.Christiandoctrinesaimatrebuildingtherelationshippersonandperson,societyandhumanbeings,universeandhumanbeingsandeventherelationshipamongthewholenatureworldonthebasicofGodandhumaninharmony.
